In the 22 years since the release of the first Mission: Impossible film, Tom Cruise's portrayal of Ethan Hunt has remained primarily unchanged, preserving both his moral compass and his attractive, curiously wrinkle-free face. Hunt's sleek actions developed a new template for the action-man hero of the spy thriller, but his American benevolence distinguishes him from his grittier rivals. Bond is insensitive towards other people, Bourne is self-absorbed, and John Wick is motivated by vengeance, even though he is a rogue assassin and not a hero. On the other side, Hunt is characterized by his "pathetic morals," a deficiency turned into a strength in the sixth installment that is worthy of being celebrated.
This time, three silvery orbs of plutonium have made their way into the hands of a group called the Apostles. This anarchist collective intends to use these orbs to blow up the Vatican, Jerusalem, and Mecca. Hunt's hands are tied even though he is willing to trade the explosives for Solomon Lane, played by Sean Harris, whom Hunt arrested in Rogue Nation. He is helped in his endeavors by reliable allies Luther (Ving Rhames) and Benji (Simon Pegg, in typically zany and entertaining form), as well as, much to his chagrin, CIA errand boy Agent Walker (Henry Cavill). Erica Sloan, the head of the CIA, played by Angela Bassett, compares him to a "hammer" while referring to Ethan Hunt as a "scalpel." Yet, a beautifully cut wood block would be a more accurate comparison. White Widow, a coquettish criminal broker, is played by Vanessa Kirby from The Crown. Kirby has a beautiful and silky purr when she speaks. White Widow is more energetic.
The 56-year-old Tom Cruise can be seen bungee-jumping into the eye of a lightning storm, swishing through a Parisian club, and swinging through the bowels of London's Tate Modern while maintaining a straight face while uttering lines such as "We'll burn that bridge when we get to it." These are just some of the cleanly choreographed set pieces in the film. The magnetic Tom Cruise is in command of motorcycles, helicopters, ropes, and rubber masks, in addition to the fluttering hearts of two women from his past, played by Michelle Monaghan's character Julia and's former MI6 agent Ilsa Faust. Conventions within the genre indicate that it is a foregone conclusion that this mission is not, in fact, "impossible." Yet, director Christopher McQuarrie deftly handles the ticking clock quality that contributes to the enjoyable nature of these flicks.
